Less Carbon Footprint

Embracing Sustainability in Animal Nutrition

At Evonik, we believe that “Less is More”. This approach drives our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of animal production through innovative, science-based solutions. Our approach focuses on low crude protein diets, enhanced with DL-methionine (MetAMINO®), to create a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious future for animal farming.

Optimizing Production to Reduce Emissions

Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges of our time, and the agriculture sector, particularly livestock farming, is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Evonik is dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations and products. In 2023, we established science-based targets approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to align with a well-below 2°C pathway, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Improvements at Production Facilities

To meet our ambitious environmental goals, we are implementing various measures, including process optimization, renewable energy adoption, and next-generation technologies. Our MetAMINO® production capacity in Singapore has been expanded, improving process efficiency and reducing the facility's carbon footprint by 6% across scopes 1, 2, and 3. Additionally, four of our six production sites use 100% green electricity, with plans to increase green energy use at other sites.

Our probiotics production facility in Léon, Spain, runs on 100% green electricity and has implemented a closed cooling water circuit to conserve water. In Mobile, Alabama, in the US, our DL-Methionine production facility has constructed a methyl mercaptan plant, enhancing supply security and reducing carbon emissions by about 7%.

At our Biolys® production sites in Blair, Nebraska (US) and Castro (Brazil), we meet 100 percent of our electrical energy demand with renewable sources. Both plants are strategically located in major corn-producing regions, ensuring a steady supply of corn-derived dextrose.

Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy

Evonik's Antwerp plant is executing a comprehensive sustainability strategy, addressing greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction. The site operates on 100% green electricity, cutting the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of MetAMINO® by 10%. Efficiency improvements include advanced catalyst systems, electrifying processes, and increasing circular production. By 2026, over 95% of the drinking water will be replaced with treated domestic wastewater.

Products and Services

Every Evonik animal nutrition product has a Product Environmental Footprint with cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data, certified by TÜV Rheinland. Our product footprint shows significant benefits compared to industry competitors. For instance, the carbon footprint of MetAMINO® produced by Evonik's global methionine production hubs is about 35% lower than the average product carbon footprint of industrially-available methionine sources.

A Different Approach

Evonik's Less is More approach to animal nutrition is an evidence-based strategy that addresses the global food challenge. By implementing cutting-edge practices such as renewable energy usage and backward integration, we are significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Our mission is to offer solutions that set new standards for efficiency and sustainability in the industry, ensuring that the growing demand for animal protein is met responsibly, without compromising the future of our planet.
